Advent Devotional

Today's Scripture:
Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13 1 You, LORD, showed favor to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. 2 You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins.[b] 8 I will listen to what God the LORD says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants— but let them not turn to folly. 9 Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. 10 Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. 11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. 12 The LORD will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. 13 Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.

Reflect: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
Throughout my career, I have been out of work three times. During these periods I have undoubtedly felt these were some of the valleys of my life for both me personally, for my wife, and for family and friends. As I look back over the journey through this history, I clearly see God’s favor on me. I can testify to the Brighter Days that followed, to the heart for forgiving and for receiving forgiveness with those closest to me, for the support of community and the new chapters opened in my life. During these seasons cycles of my life I know that God has been a constant. I know that He is still there, He still loves me as I am, and h He loves me as His adopted son. This Is Our God. What I will treasure most through the study of this scripture is to remember God’s faithfulness to me personally, and His forgiveness of my straying from His path. I will embrace these truths and make it permanent fabric of who I am in Christ, so that I am stronger and more equipped to testify to his love for humanity.

Read: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
Throughout The Bible, there are stories of God’s blessings and His show of favor to his followers; turn a page, and you will find a story of God’s people turning away from God’s direction. In a time of turning away, the Psalmist here reflects upon earlier memories of relationship with God and poetically describes the truths of how He has covered His people with love, forgiveness, and salvation before, and He looks forward to a restoration of that relationship.

Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
Heavenly Father, I pray that I remember daily the showering of your goodness upon my life, and that I listen to what you are saying to me this season so I can move as you would have me move for your will alone. Keep my thoughts and memories of your love, faithfulness, and salvation a part of my daily walk, and continue strengthening my faith so that I may be restored to you. In your Son’s Holy name, I pray. Amen.
