Advent Devotional

Today's Scripture:
Psalm 27:1-4 The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour[a] me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.

Reflect: Reflect on a story in your life that pertains to this scripture.
The enemy that comes to mind when I read this text was a person. Maybe someone who is far from God and seeks worldly fulfillment. While God does give us clarity to deal with people we don’t agree with, I don’t think that is the enemy depicted in these verses. The real enemy spends its time working against us and uses our worldly desires to tear us from love, happiness, and most of all, God. The real enemy is Satan and sin. Satan is powerless against God, so he targets God’s people. Lucky for us, there is no room for Satan to creep in as long as we hold tight to our faith. We, God’s people, don’t have to fear; but those who live in the absence of God are scared. Their hearts have no resistance to rebellion and disobedience of God. Our job is to go out and be missionaries of Christ in every setting of our life! Show these people what it’s like to be loved unconditionally, let them see Christ in and through you!

Read: What is this scripture telling you during this season?
Sometimes we feel so immersed in this world of sin that we start to feel intimidated. We must remember that as long as we hold tight to our faith, we remain under God’s wing!

Respond: How is this scripture calling you to respond?
Heavenly Father, I pray that you give us eyes to see through Satan’s works. I pray that you turn our eyes from Satan and onto You, God. Thank you for your guidance in this world of sin. Please give us the wisdom and motivation to guide others onto the same path You have led us to!
